Bostwick comments on Skiddy Park police substation in Post Standard

"We hear it a lot: Can we just have conversations and be on a first-name basis with officers?" says Rebecca Bostwick, managing director of the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion. "And [cops] have been good about it at the Near Westside block parties—just shoot some hoops with the kids. It's a work in progress. I'm optimistic about what the field house can do to move that forward."

The Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion collaborated with Pet Partners of Central New York, a local chapter of a national organization that offers animal-assisted therapy and activities with the help of people-animal volunteer teams, for National Public Health Week.

Jennifer Karas Montez, Gerald B. Cramer Faculty Scholar of Aging Studies, was quoted in the Reuters article, "U.S. life expectancy varies by two decades depending on location." "The bottom line is that our life expectancy is increasingly being shaped by where we live within the U.S.," says Karas Montez. "Lifestyle behaviors are not causes, they are symptoms. They are symptoms of the environment and the social and economic deprivation that many parts of the country now endure thanks to decades of policy decisions."

Jennifer Karas Montez, Gerald B. Cramer Faculty Scholar of Aging Studies, discusses the relationship between education and mortality in the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond article, "The Mortality Gap." "There's really nothing inherently causal about the relationship between education and mortality," she says. "The context we're living in shapes that relationship. Do you live in an environment where education opens the door to getting a good job, to having health care, to living in a safe neighborhood? Bringing Sports Back to Skiddy

Healthy Monday Walktober 2015 A Success!

Walktober 2015 was sponsored in partnership with Healthy Monday Syracuse, the Syracuse University Wellness Initiative and SU Department of Recreation Services. Participants from Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate, SUNY ESF and the VA Hospital walked their way to better health, covering 63,953 miles in 31 days.

Cynthia Morrow Inaugural Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion

Dr. Cynthia B. Morrow, professor of practice in Maxwell’s Department of Public Administration and International Affairs, has been appointed as the Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion. As Lerner Chair, Morrow will teach public health at the graduate level. She will also be involved in community projects sponsored by the Lerner Center.

 The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth), in strategic partnership with the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion at The Maxwell School, has selected six communities across New York State for grant awards totaling $2 million to help them become healthier, more active places where residents of all ages can thrive.
